Production & Product Design with Dave Hakkens & Jerry De Vos [2019] The Maldives is notoriously known for it's white sandy beaches and crystal blue seas, but it also faces a big plastic waste issue that's damaging the environment and the people that live there. We travelled to Male (capital city) in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans to set up a plastic recycling workspace. This workspace exists for locals to do something with the abundance of plastic waste that floods the crowded streets of Male. We designed and installed a functioning recycling workspace all inside a shipping container. During our stay we invited local NGO's and 25 school children to the opening of the workspace. We introduced them to the machines and educated them into the different types of plastics and the harm it has on their environment. The workspace is now a fully working recycling centre, offering creativity and a workspace.
